GST East London Hub recognised for challenging stereotypes

In October 2018, the Mayor of London announced funding for the Gender Action Award scheme for London Schools who demonstrate a commitment to challenging gender bias. The full awards process opened to London schools earlier this year ahead of its national roll-out in 2020.  Both Willow Brook and Riverley are very pleased and proud to have been Gender Action Supporter Schools since March 2019.  In August, Willow Brook received the Gender Action Initiator in recognition for the “Girls Only” Coding Club which began in early 2018 in collaboration with Kano Computing and Code Club UK.  The Initiator level award also recognises the Action Research project being undertaken at Willow Brook in conjunction with Manchester Metropolitan University where the project focuses on  improving inclusion and diversity for those interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects with their cross curricular application into Arts based subjects (STEAM).  Gender Action School Champions are expected to be announced with a ceremony at City Hall in December 2019.
